Waldviertler Schmalspurbahn

The Waldviertler Schmalspurbahn (Waldviertel Narrow-Gauge Railway) is a historic 760 mm gauge railway system in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. Together, its two routes form what is known as the “Nordast” (Northern Branch) of the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railways, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2025.

📜 The Two Operations

The system today consists of two distinct operations:

  • Waldviertelbahn (operated by NĂ–VOG): Runs between GmĂĽnd and Litschau, as well as between GmĂĽnd and GroĂź Gerungs. This is the main tourist line with scheduled services and themed excursions.
  • Wackelstein-Express (operated by the volunteer Waldviertler Schmalspurbahnverein, founded 1986): Runs on the branch from Alt-Nagelberg to Heidenreichstein. This section is run entirely by volunteers using historic diesel locomotives from the 1930s.

✨ The Experience

A journey on the Waldviertelbahn offers a nostalgic trip through the picturesque Waldviertel landscape. The route passes through the historic town of Weitra with its Renaissance castle, crosses a notable stone viaduct with seven arches, and climbs to the “Waldviertler Semmering” â€”the highest point at 806 meters, which marks the watershed between the Danube and Elbe rivers.

The railway offers a variety of themed excursions throughout the season, including:

  • Wizard Train (Zaubererzug) for families
  • Dumpling and Alpaca Express (Knödel- und Alpakaexpress)
  • Schrammel Sound Express with traditional Viennese music
  • Steam train rides with vintage vehicle displays

The Wackelstein-Express also offers special experiences like cabrio rides on open-platform carriages and moonlight trips.
