The Schneebergbahn is a historic cog railway in Austria that has been taking visitors up Lower Austria’s highest mountain, the Schneeberg (2,076 m), since 1897. It is one of only three cog railways still operating in Austria and is the country’s longest at 9.7 km.

✨ The Experience
The journey begins at Puchberg am Schneeberg station and climbs through changing Alpine landscapes, covering 1,200 vertical meters before arriving at Hochschneeberg station—Austria’s highest train station at 1,795 meters.
There are two train options:
- Salamander Train: A modern diesel locomotive in service since 1999. The journey takes 40 minutes and offers barrier-free access at the mountain station.
- Nostalgic Steam Train: A 125-year-old steam locomotive that takes 90 minutes for the ascent. It runs on select dates and recaptures the experience of Kaiser Franz Joseph, who visited the railway in 1902.
A worthwhile stop is the Baumgartner station, where you can try the delicious Schneebergbuchteln (sweet yeast dumplings), a local specialty. At the top, more than 80 km of hiking trails await, with panoramic views extending as far as Lake Neusiedl on clear days.

Note: Due to maintenance work on the Puchberger Bahn (R98), rail replacement buses will operate between Bad Fischau-Brunn and Puchberg am Schneeberg on select dates in the second half of 2026, including July 16, August 20, September 17, October 15, and November 19.
